In the wake of the devastating Palisades fire, California communities once again find themselves asking: What more could have been done to prevent such destruction? While wildfires on this scale often seem unstoppable, one fact remains clear—fire suppression systems save lives and protect property. Fire Sprinklers are the first line of defense when it comes to structural fires, and automatic fire sprinkler systems have been proven time and again to be the difference between a contained fire and a catastrophic loss. While they are not designed to stop large-scale wildfires, they absolutely play a critical role in preventing smaller fires from escalating into full-blown disasters. There is real-world proof that sprinkler systems savelives & property. In 2022 a fire broke out in a 12-story residential building in a Los Angeles Apartment, but because a fire sprinkler system was installed, the blaze was contained to a single unit. No lives were lost, and property damage was minimal. In 2021 a San Francisco restaurant fire was extinguished within seconds due to overhead sprinklers, preventing a total loss and saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that buildings with fire sprinklers experience an average of 81% less property damage than those without them. Many business and homeowners hesitate to install fire sprinkler systems due to perceived costs, but the numbers tell a different story as fire damage in commercial properties without sprinklers averages $369,000 per incident. With sprinklers? $52,000. And Insurance rates drop significantly for buildings equipped with sprinkler systems, business downtime is drastically reduced, meaning fewer losses in revenue after a fire event. The Palisades fire serves as yet another urgent reminder of the importance of preparedness, prevention, and investment in proven fire suppression systems. Fire sprinkler systems should be a standard, not an afterthought. And local governments should continue expanding fire safety regulations to ensure better protection. In short—the upfront investment in fire suppression pays for itself many times over. At Friendly Fire Systems, our mission is simple: to protect lives and property, one sprinkler head at a time. The cost of not being prepared far outweighs the investment in prevention.
